17 years of abusive marriage, 1 Bold Decision and an Unstoppable Comeback story.
The Darkness of Life
I was born in Mumbai in 1973, into a traditional Muslim family where desires were often eclipsed by the shadows of tradition. At 19, while still in college, I was married to a man in a small town in Karnataka. By 20, I was a mother. By 24, I had two children and a toxic, abusive relationship that tore at every fiber of my being—mentally, emotionally, physically, and financially. For 17 years, I clung to the hope that things would get better. They never did.
In 2010, at 38, I made the most terrifying decision of my life—I chose to walk away. With no previous work experience, no bank balance, and two children to raise, I stepped into a world that seemed cruel and indifferent. My father had just suffered a massive brain stroke that he would never recover from. My mother was battling cancer. I had no savings, no alimony, no safety net—only the fear of the unknown and the will to survive.
The Struggle of Starting Over
My journey began with small steps. I knew that education would be my lifeline, so I enrolled in an MBA in Marketing, funded by my aunt. Despite juggling motherhood, a job, and studies, I graduated with distinction. But the challenges didn’t end there. My first job at JM Financial required a 4-5 hour daily commute, which was a nightmare. I had to leave it within six months. But I persisted and soon found a job at Femina magazine. Although it provided stability, I felt a deep sense of unfulfillment. I knew there was more for me out there.
One day, I came across an ad in a newspaper for a course at the Image Consulting Business Institute (ICBI). That moment marked the turning point in my life. I attended the orientation, and something clicked.
Life’s Turning Point
When I came across the Image Consulting program at ICBI, I knew I wasn’t just signing up for a course—I was embarking on a journey to rebuild myself from the ground up. It was about understanding the science behind image management, the importance of soft skills, and how these elements could shape one’s destiny.
As I went deep into the world of image consulting and soft skills, I began to understand how much these elements could influence not just how others saw me, but how I saw myself. It was like a switch flipped inside me. I started to believe in my potential, and with that belief, everything around me began to change. With this newfound confidence, I took a leap of faith and moved to Dubai in 2015. I landed a job as a People Development Specialist at ICCA, a top culinary institute. It felt surreal—coaching and training over 400 students on how to build their personalities using the very concepts I had learned.
From struggling to get through an interview to now helping others find their voice and build their image—it was a full-circle moment for me.
Rising from the Ashes
My journey didn’t stop there. I became the Chief Editor of Aspire magazine in Dubai, interviewing some of the biggest names in the industry. I landed a project with the US Consulate to curate a 550-page coffee-table book now traveling the globe. My self-worth soared, and I created an online course on ‘Personal Branding’ and authored a book, "Transform Your Self, Turbocharge Your Success".
Today, I stand tall, not just as a survivor, but as a beacon of hope and empowerment. I have mentored over 400 students in personal branding and communication skills, conducted countless workshops on image management and holistic wellness for individuals, and partnered with organizations to enhance workplace dynamics.
My journey has inspired my family, friends, and community, showing them that it’s never too late to transform your life.
The Power of Belief
My story is not just about overcoming adversity; it’s about the power of belief—the belief that even when life seems impossible, you can find the strength within to rise above it. It’s about courage—the courage to take that first step into the unknown. It’s about resilience—staring down every challenge, every obstacle, and saying, “I will not give up.”
To anyone reading this, know that your circumstances do not define you. You have the power to rewrite your story, to turn every setback into a stepping stone, and to emerge stronger, wiser, and more powerful than ever before.
ICBI was the fuel that fanned the fire within me. The tools and training I received were not just about building an image—they were about building a life. A life of purpose, passion, and endless possibilities. So here I am, a woman who faced darkness and chose to walk towards the light. A woman who now stands as a testament to the power of courage, resilience, and the unshakeable belief that no matter how deep the valley, you can always rise to the peak.
And if I can do it, so can you.
